Talk Time with Genesis

genesisHi everyone my name is Genesis. I was born and raised in Miami, Fl. I currently still reside in south Florida. I love all things beauty related as well as traveling. Currently I work as a Certified Travel Consultant. I love helping people go to fun and exciting places they otherwise never would have gone.

Q: How long have you been natural?

A: I have been natural going on 2 years.

Q: What made you decide to go natural?

A: I decided to go natural 2 years ago shortly after I made the decision to become a born again believer in Jesus Christ. I wasn’t going to allow other people’s idea of beauty dictate me anymore and decided to fall in love with the hair that grew out of my scalp naturally!

Q: What was your natural hair journey like for you? Did you transition or big chop (BC)?

A: I did not go for the BC, it was my own personal decision not to. I focused mainly on moisturizing and deep conditioning my hair which i strongly believed has made my journey very successful.

Q: How would you describe your hair?

A: I would describe my hair as multi-cultral. You see I am of puerto rican decent, with a huge melting pot of hair textures. That is how my curls are, a mixture of spirals, coils and faboulousness lol. This is why I was never obessed with “hair typing” just the health of my hair and finding out what it likes and doesn’t like along the way.

Q: What is your hair regimen like?

A: My hair routine includes using the L.O.C method to retain moisture. For this I use water, cantu shea butter leave in and castor or coconut oil to seal. I also sleep with a satin pillowcase at night. To cleanse I clarify with apple cider vinegar (ACV) once a month and I co-wash once to twice per week. My favorite style is a wash n go or a high bun.

Q: What is your go-to style?

A: My favorite style is a wash n go or a high bun.

Q: What do you love most about your hair?

A: I love the thickness and softness of it. A lot of tender loving care (TLC) contributed to that!

Q: What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTubers or blogs?

A: I enjoy reading articles on, curlbox blog, and On youtube, I love watching the videos of Shameless Maya, SunKissAlba, itsmyraerae, MoKnowsHair and countless others.

Q: Do you have any regrets about going natural?

A: I do not have any regrets about going natural!

Q: How do you deal with shrinkage?

A: I deal with shrinkage by embracing it. I have accepted that my hair will do what it wants to do in the end and I have grown to love it.

Q: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?

A: I have actually never done anything “crazy” to me hair. I probably experienced some very bad haircuts as a kid though lol.

Q: How do you deal with the issue of frizz?

A: I actually don’t mind frizz, the perfect neat curly look is boring to me.

Q: What are your secrets to length retention? Do you believe length can be retained without protective styling?

A: Yes I do believe that protective styling aids in length retention.  What I do is stretch my hair with braidouts and twistouts on dry hair. Not only is it easier for me to manage, I can rock a style for almost a week before having to cowash. Also, stretching on dry hair gives me more volume.

Q: Who is your curl crush?

A: On Instagram my hair crush is @lunalooks her hair OMG!!!

Q: Are there any hair styling tips and tricks you would like to share with the natural hair community?

A: My tips are  deep condition and moisturize regularly.  Have fun in whatever hair stage you’re in (twa, bsl, etc) and protective style.
